Being tattooed and having a tattoo are very personal experiences, whether your tattoo is very meaningful or is simply artistic decoration. This coupled with the permanent nature of the craft means that you should be sure this is something you want and are willing to commit to.
Firefly isn’t a street shop and there’s no flash on our walls to choose from. Your design is custom created to be unique to you. Before contacting your artist, spend some time considering what you want, and collect images or other references that can help your artist see your idea clearly. Some tips for collecting references:
This could range from pictures of art you like or images in a similar style to what you’re looking for, to examples of colors you like, or just a certain feel.
Don't limit yourself to pictures of other tattoos. We won't be copying other tattoos or using them as references, so while these can be useful, don't limit yourself in your search for references.
Feel free to include images from our galleries of tattoos you like so we can see what in particular attracts you to our work.
Once you've got all your ideas gathered together, take a look through our galleries – if you haven’t already – and see which artist’s style most closely matches the idea in your head.
The next step is to send an email to the artist you want to work with. We only use email; there’s no phone in the studio. We do it this way to create a better environment to be tattooed; there’s no phone ringing off the hook, and no one has to stop what they’re doing to answer it. If you are not sure which artist is right for you, feel free to let us know, and we can help determine who is the best fit for your tattoo.
We get a lot of email on a daily basis, and our attention goes first to current clients, then to return clients, then to new requests. We try very hard to answer our email promptly, but the volume dictates that we may not be able to answer every email we receive. If you do not get a response right away, please be patient, and be sure to follow the directions in your artist's autoresponder if you receive one.
Once you have connected with your artist, the first thing you’ll likely do is schedule a time to come in to Firefly to meet your artist in person for a consultation. You’ll bring in your reference pictures and you and your artist will discuss the details of your tattoo and answer any questions you might have. If you are ready to schedule your first session you'll leave a nonrefundable deposit, generally $100, and we'll get you on the books to start your tattoo. Some of our artists use an online scheduling system, so that you can schedule any future sessions from home at your convenience.
It’s finally here! Today what was once just an image in your head will come to life on your skin. Being fashionably early isn’t necessary, but please don't be fashionably late. Be sure to be well rested, fed, and sober, and your artist will do the same. Wear comfortable clothes, and bring your photo ID. Also, be sure you’re able to stay for the entire scheduled time; rushing a tattoo is never a good idea.
At the end of your session, you’ll be given complete instructions on how to care for your tattoo as it heals over the next few weeks. If your tattoo is complete, congratulations on your new artwork! If more sessions are required, we’ll see you again soon!
